The newspaper industry is in some ways a competitive confraternity. Each paper is fiercely loyal to its city, while constantly sending reporters to parts unknown in hopes of out-scooping their rivals. All the while they are united in their singular pursuit of truth.
Within the Newspaper Association of America (NAA) art collection is a group of historic character depicting “paper boys through the years," youngsters that went on to greatness. Baseball players to Supreme Court justices, movie actors to surgeons and presidents that all delivered the news in their youth.
Artists Circle Fine Art suggested framing and a secure track system in the elevator lobby that provided for a greater viewing opportunity for this set of singular American tales. In the NAA reception area, artist John Garret created a pair of assemblages that incorporated elements from actual association’s paper members. Watercolor painter, Susan Abbott was commissioned to create a large piece that captures the association’s achievements over its life representing the news. New York printer, Mark Smith crafted three gestural, figurative pieces using newsprint as his “canvas”. The balance of the NAA’s office became home to a unique poster collection.
The sole criteria we established were that the prints had to include a representation of newspaper in the artwork. Collaged by Raughenberg, painted by Harnett or wadded up in a trash can by Red Grooms, it did not matter as long as it was the news. |
